What is the Altra Escalante Racer All About?

Altra are up and coming within the running shoe industry. They have proven time and time again that their shoes are built to perform and last.

Altra Escalante Racer

I have reviewed many of Altra’s shoes on this blog and they all seem to be of good quality and perform exactly as advertised.

This has caused me to go on a bit of a streak.

Because now I want to see all of Altra’s shoes until I find one I don’t like (lol).

You are now reading my Altra Escalante Racer review.

I am going to perform extensive research on this shoe and see whether or not it is good for running or simply a waste of time.

Without further ado, lets get right into it.

Amazing Running Shoe!
  • Quality
  • Comfort
  • Style
  • True to Size
  • Support
  • Value for Money

Bottom Line:

This shoe has a lack of arch support and should NOT be used in the rain. However, it’s built to perform for running, designed by one of the best running shoe companies in the world. It’s made for competitive racing but can also be used for casual running. It’s extremely comfortable, performs flawlessly and high in quality. It’s more expensive than other shoes but bound to last a long time due to its durability.

Altra Escalante Racer Review

Product name: Altra Escalante Racer

Type of Shoe: Competitive running

Best for: Running (competitively and casually)

Bad for: Casual, everyday wear, walking, etc

Price: $100 – $150

What is the Altra Escalante Racer Shoe?

This shoe is an upgrade from the original Altra Escalante. It features some of the same stuff as the original but improved for speed and performance.

The upper is made of a breathable mesh material to allow for ventilation, and the heel counter allows for easier maneuverability around sharp corners.

It also features an EGO midsole which is a little firmer than the original, creating more energy return and a little less cushion.

These shoes are very limited and every new design is inspired by a major city.

Other features include: balanced cushioning (heel and forefoot at the same distance to the ground), a footshape toe box (for toes to spread out naturally) and footpod technology (to map the bones and tendons of your foot for a natural ride).

Altra Escalante Racer Outsole

The midsole grooves help your feet to flex while increasing speed and performance.

It is then finished with Altra’s special technology; “EGO”. This features promotes energy return to keep the wearer less fatigued and running longer.

The Claims

I want to dive deeper into the claims that Altra make about the advanced cushioning system, the heel counter and how well the EGO midsole performs.

These sound like some amazing benefits that I haven’t seen on other Altra shoes before.

So I was intrigued when I discovered them and want to know whether or no these claims are real or a big fat exaggeration.

Is It Cushiony and Soft?

I took a look at all the reviews where people are talking about the comfort factor.

And this shoe is nothing but comfortable thanks to the EGO midsole, balanced cushioning and footpod technology.

This allows the wearer give faster take offs, get more energy return and has firm cushioning for ultimate comfort.

The fact of the matter is, comfort is a must in a running shoe.

Without enough cushioning, pain and discomfort can occur and stop the runner from enjoying his exercise.

Everyone that likes this shoe talks about how comfortable it is and I have no doubts that it performs the way people claim.

Does the Light Heel Counter Perform?

For those who don’t know, heel counters are designed to make corners much easier and quicker.

It offers agility and higher performance that other shoes don’t offer.

Well the Altra Escalante Racer has a much lighter heel counter for optimum cornering and extra comfort on the race course.

This shoe is designed for running the race course, marathons, sprints, road running, pavement running, etc.

The heel counter actually works like a charm and makes cutting corners a breeze.

That’s a feature not found on the original Altra Escalante and unique to the Racer itself.

Does the EGO Midsole Perform?

The EGO midsole system is a little firmer than the original Escalante which may sound counterintuitive.

But this little change actually promotes more energy return and keeps the athlete running longer without getting as fatigued.

You could say this gives you a competitive edge over other racers, but in my opinion, all shoes have their own advantages and disadvantages.

For example, the disadvantage for the firmer cushioning is less softness.

It is still very comfortable as others have mentioned, but the firm cushioning means it’s not as soft and plush.

This is very good for running racers but not so good for casual running.

Does the Altra Escalante Racer Work as Intended?

Altra Escalante Racer Upper

The good news is that this shoe performs for what it’s made for.

That is running racers.

It has immense agility, energy return, faster takeoffs, more speed and more comfort.

It was made for competitive running and it performs flawlessly in that field.

Yes it can still be used for casual running as it’s still comfortable.

So yes, the Altra Escalante Racer DOES work exactly as designed to and a force to be reckoned with within the racing shoe community.

The Price & Where to Buy

This shoe can be bought from a few different places, however, my favorite is Amazon.com.

Amazon has the best deals, fast deliveries and even free shipping.

Their 30-day return policy also allows people to send their purchase back for a full refund, no questions asked.

Pros & Cons

  • Extremely comfortable

  • Made for competitive running
  • High value for money
  • Lots of features
  • Lots of ventilation
  • Altra are well respected and trusted within the community

  • Little-to-no arch support

The Altra Escalante Racer Alternative

Saucony Women's VERSAFOAM Cohesion 12

The Saucony VERSAFOAM Cohesion 12 is a great alternative, as it’s also designed for running but better for those with neutral or high arches.

It has comfort, durability, wide size options and a good price range.

The downside is that it’s cheaper and won’t last as long, but can be an alternative racing shoe for people with high arches.

Saucony has a good reputation for making high quality sneakers and I have a full rundown on who they are and what they are all about here.

Final Verdict

The bottom line is this: Altra SPECIALIZE in road running and trail running.

They know exactly what’s required for ultimate performance without sacrificing comfort.

They’ve done the testing, they know what works and they have the proof to back it up.

Altra have stood the test of time and they are one of the best brands out there when it comes to running shoes, and I have no doubts that the Altra Escalante Racer performs exactly as advertised.

It does have some cons like the lack of water-resistance which can destroy the shoe if used on wet grounds.

The other downside is the lack of arch support, which is why I’ve provided an alternative above.

Other than those small cons, the Altra Escalante Racer is one of the best running shoes I have reviewed thus far and highly recommend it.

Well that concludes my review on the Altra Escalante Racer.

  1. Thanks for sharing such a concise article. I would love to know the weight of the shoe and if it can suit a long distance race?

Do you have it for female, can I order it online and make home delivery. What is the maximum time to deliver?

    • Hey edahnewton, the weight is 7.4 ounces and yes it’s made for the track, so long distance running is its specialization

There are male and female versions and as I mentioned in the article, I recommend Amazon.com for the online purchase because they deliver in a timely manner.

Hope this answers all your questions 🙂

  2. Wow, this is a very wonderful shoe to be honest and I really like the feel that the shoe gives too. It is the first time I am coming online to do some research on some running shoes. I like this one.

Although the price is a bit high for me compared to some other running shoes, but I guess its all about the quality.

    Thanks for the info.

  3. Woooooow! the Altra Escalante Racer is so appealing, i just wanna grab a pair. Honestly, I have never found any single brand with all the features embedded like this shoe. I guess it would be a game changer for many runners out there. Please i am a little curious about the features and wanna ask if you can recommend any other running shoe brand with with better features?

I would be looking forward to your reply as i wanna prepare for a marathon after the lockdown and now looking out to get the very best runner out there. THANKS for this amazingly detailed review. Cheers!

    • You’re welcome Creators Hub.

In all honesty, these are some of the best racing shoes on this blog so these are what I recommend.

Any other shoe is going to be cheaper but you’ll also be sacrificing quality. As I told Henderson, the Saucony VERSAFOAM would be a great alternative for you 🙂

  4. For a good running shoe, I would always give it a very good tick anytime. I have been looking to get myself one actually specially since I started working indoors and trying to get fit since the pandemic. This Altra rscalante racer will be a good pick for me. I like the fact that the shoe gives a lot of comfort. Nice post.

    • Hey Riley.

These are certainly good for casual and running racers, especially if you’re new and starting out.

      I’m glad you like it!

  5. Hello Brandon, beautiful review on this Altra Escalante and going by what information you have given us it would be very cool running with this shoe.

This is the the perfect shoe for me. It’s sad to see it doesn’t have arch support though, but I would be able to deal with that. I hope it’s light enough for someone not to feel any weight on their feet?

    • It sure is, Benson. It only weighs 7.4 ounces which is extremely comfortable, especially for a shoe with this much features.
