Altra King MT 2 Review – Be Wary of the Drainage Holes

A trail running shoe has to be incredibly durable and able to withstand some of the harshest conditions that mother nature throws at it.

I actually like Altra due to their widened toe box and think they have some of the best shoes for trail running.

But will the Altra King MT 2 perform as good as other shoes?

Do we have a winner on our hands, or are we just looking at a big flop?

I like to do research on things before coming up with my own conclusion.

So without further ado, please enjoy my Altra King MT 2 review.

ALTRA Men's King MT 2 Trail Running Shoe

Nice Shoe, But There's One Problem
  • Quality
  • Comfort
  • Style
  • True to Size
  • Support
  • Value for Money
4.3

Bottom Line:

The Altra King MT 2 shoes are designed for mud running and Spartan races but can also be used for trail running.

However, they feature drainage holes that get your feet wet when running in wet conditions.

If you don’t plan on using it for mud running, I would stay away from them as it’s only going to cause annoyance and saturate your feet all the time.

A better alternative is the Altra Lone Peak 4.0.

Altra King MT 2 Review

Product name: Altra King MT 2

Type of Shoe: Trail running

Best for: Mud running, Spartan races, etc

Bad for: Normal trail running on wet terrain (feet will get wet)

Price: $140

What is the Altra King MT 2?

The King MT 2 is an upgraded version of the original king and Altra have done a complete overhaul of what the original offered.

They possess better grip, increased durability, drainage and performance.

It consists of a hand tailored mesh upper with cut eye stays for flexibility and comfort.

The Vibram Mega Grip Litebase outsole ensures the same grip as the original but with 40% less thickness and 25% reduced weight.

Altra’s special technology “EGO” is a responsive cushioning that offers energy return with every stride.

Other key features:

  • Balanced cushioning – Forefoot and heel the same distance to the ground for low-impact running
  • FootShape – A more natural running experience, especially up and down hills
  • GaiterTrap – Prevents debris from building up underneath the shoe
  • TrailClaw – Provides traction at toe-off

Size and Fit Details

Altra are renown for their widened toe box which is what makes them so special for anyone with wide feet.

Even if you don’t have wide feet, the extra room promotes a natural running experience because your toes get to spread out naturally instead of being restricted.

Altra shoes are usually always true to size, and that is what I’ve found to be true with the King MT 2.

Does It Perform?

As you know by now, it is a trail running shoe and should be kept for this activity only.

They are not made for pavements, roads, on the treadmill, etc.

They are strictly trail running shoes and I’m about to tell you whether or not they actually perform.

People say they have perfect grip, much better than the previous version, and that the strap is placed in a position that adds security and offers a solid construction.

This strap has received a lot of praise from the community because they don’t have to double-knot their laces anymore.

Others also love the Balanced Cushioning, creating ease of use up and down hills.

All the features have been well thought out and put their for a reason.

Those reasons were to make an outstanding shoe that performs for trail running.

So yes! They 100% perform.

What I Like

I like the grip and security.

The grip is so well done that it can stay glued in wet, rainy and muddy conditions which is highly important for those serious about trail running.

This alone, plus the added security from the strap, provides lots of confidence that you can run efficiently and easily without fear of hurting yourself.

Also it is a minimalist shoe.

Even though it offers many features to maximize its performance, it is still lightweight! (8.7 oz in fact)

This is good for those that don’t want to be bogged down by a heavy shoe but still want lots of features.

The Bad

Okay so there are some things wrong with this shoe that you need to know.

The velcro strap works well for most, but for others it’s simply a no-go.

Most like that the strap has been placed higher for that extra comfort and stability, but others think it makes it far too tight so they have to leave it loosened.

The other huge problem is the drainage holes.

ALTRA Men's King MT 2 Drainage System

Keep in mind that these were designed mostly for Mud running and Spartan races.

Those drainage holes perform flawlessly because they drain out all the debris and gunk that get inside.

However, this causes some issues when all you want to do is go out for a run and if the grass or trail is wet, your feet get saturated.

This is a massive flaw and means it is not the best option for running in the rain or wet terrain.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s still amazing for mud runs or Spartan races, but for casual running you might want to check out my alternative.

The Price & Where to Buy

The price of the King MT 2 is about $140.

Altra sell them for $140 on their official website, but I find that Amazon is a lot better thanks to their free shipping, fast deliveries and return policy.

Their 30-day return policy lets people get a full refund, no questions asked.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Amazing grip
  • Widened toe box
  • Minimalist shoe
  • A good amount of features
  • Lightweight
  • Comfortable

Cons

  • Velcro strap uncomfortable for some people and have to be left loose
  • The drainage holes saturate your feet in wet conditions

The King MT 2 Alternative

Altra Lone Peak 4.0 Running Shoe

The Altra Lone Peak 4.0 is another great trail running shoe from Altra.

However, there is no drainage holes for water to get inside and soak your feet.

It has more features than the MT 2 since it’s not a minimalist shoe, and happens to be a little cheaper too.

It’s not good for mud running but it’s definitely a better choice for those that just want to go on a run at their favorite hiking trail without fear of getting their feet wet.

The Lone Peak has proven to be one of Altra’s best trail running shoes and that’s why it’s my #1 alternative.

Final Verdict

The Altra King MT 2 is built to perform for mud runs for and things of that nature.

For those they work perfectly because of the lightweight design, drainage holes for keeping water out and maximum traction.

But for running your local hiking trail?

Not a chance.

I love this shoe even with the drainage holes as that is made to increase performance for its intended use.

Other than that there is absolutely nothing wrong with it.

Some don’t like the velcro strap but most actually love it.

This is a great shoe and definitely a must-have in your arsenal of trail running shoes, especially those getting involved in Spartan races!

Well that concludes my Altra King MT 2 review.
