Bottom line:

The Altra Lone Peak 4 is a very affordable running trail shoe with lots of features, immense comfort and traction to tackle almost any outdoor terrain.

The major downside is that they are not waterproof, which can be a pro or con depending on how you look at it.

The mesh material actually cuts down on weight and increases ventilation.

I think this shoe is amazing for the price and well worth the money.

What is the Altra Lone Peak 4?

It’s a new fresh take on the original Lone Peak but with a few updates to keep up with today’s technology.

It’s designed for mountain peaks but can also be used for normal trail scenarios.

Altra describes these shoes as one of the most durable you’ll ever own, thanks to the rugged upper and different constructions integrated into the outsole.

It features a new upper with static webbing for better clinching ability, a flexible strap overlay for extra toe room and sandpaper textured toe cap.

Ventilation consists of a mesh upper, mesh heel and mesh in the forefoot.

The rubber outsole features a MacTrac rubber which offers some of the best traction out there.

It also features multi-directional carved lugs for cutting down on weight.

The StoneGuard traction resembles the skeletal structure of the foot, providing immense flexibility and performance.

There is a lot more to it I’d rather you check out the features for yourself to get a better understanding of what they have to offer.

Key Features

Footshape toe box – Allows your toes to spread out naturally…good for walking up hill and down hill

Zero drop – Places your forefoot and heal at the same distance to the ground for a low-impact adventure

A-bound cushioning – This feature provides more energy return, more cushioning and less impact, adding an extra spring in your step

4-point Gaitertrap – This little contraption stops debris from building up underneath the shoe

TrailClaw – Strategic lugs ensure lots of traction at toe-off

MaxTrac – MaxTrac ensures lots of traction, grip and durability, allowing the shoe to tackle some of the hardest terrain in the world

StoneGuard – When tackling rough terrain, StoneGuard deflects rocks and debris to the midsole so they make their way out of the shoe altogether

Who It’s For

It’s specifically designed for hiking and adventuring the great outdoors, but more so rough terrain like mountain peaks.

Anyone looking to tackle some of the harshest hiking trails should definitely consider this shoe thanks to the immense grip and traction.

A lot of people also love and use it for the comfort, even when not hiking rough terrain.

Because the fact of the matter is, it’s a very affordable hiking shoe with lots of grip.

So for anyone wanting a good trail shoe without breaking the bank, this one is for you.

Price & Purchase Details

The price does vary but at the time of writing this article it sits under $100.

My favorite place to buy the Altra Lone Peak 4 is definitely Amazon.com.

They’ve got the best customer service, they are well-known and trusted by every man and his dog, have free shipping and fastest deliveries.

They also have a 30-day return policy, which basically means those who don’t like their purchase can send their shoes back and get a full refund.

Do I Recommend It?

Altra Lone Peak 4.0 Running Shoe Upper

These are some of the best hiking shoes I have reviewed to date.

The fact that anyone with any arch type can fit this shoe comfortably makes it stand out from the crowd.

That’s how much comfort they have!

Plus anyone with wide feet will fit these comfortably too.

Everyone that purchases these shoes absolutely love them for the comfort, grip, support and their ability to fit all arch types.

In my eyes, a shoe that can do all of this, in this price range is a big winner.

I have done the research, discovered all the good points and the bad, and I have come to my conclusion that the Altra Lone Peak 4 are among some of the most affordable and comfortable trail shoes on the market.

Yes, I highly recommend these shoes!

Alternative/Similar Shoes

Another good hiking shoe, although not for harsh terrain, is the ASICS GEL-Venture 5.

This shoe is a little cheaper than the Peak 4 but does have its downsides like the bland design and may cause blisters when first worn.

Also the Nike Air Max 720 is good for hiking but only recommended for easy trails and not harsh terrain.

These are a lot more expensive than all other shoes mentioned but they are versatile and last longer.

My Final Opinion

Most people buying these shoes love them, it’s a no brainer.

The small minority of others give it a bad review for silly little things.

For example:

One guy gave it 1 star because he got 203 miles out of them before they started falling apart.

Are you serious?

203 miles is HUGE for a shoe worth $80 something dollars.

Another person used them for road running and gave it a bad review because they didn’t last long.

These are not road running shoes so they do not deserve a bad rating for something they are not designed for.

Apart from the small amount of cons I found, there are far more pros and good things about them.

I’m a huge fan and think they are amazing considering the low price point.

  1. I really appreciate how you specify that it fits perfect when you purchase your own size. A lot of shoes you either have to get a size up or a size down and that’s really inconvenient when it comes to online shopping. The only things that, I think, should be improved is its non-water resisted material and their lack of pavement usage. Aside from that, I think these shoes are great and not to forget how affordable they are.

    • Although if you add water resistance, it’s going to add more weight and take away a lot of the air flow.

So at the end of the day it comes down to personal preference.

Definitely opt for waterproof hiking shoes if you plan on hiking in the rain.

But if you don’t plan on it, these are definitely good enough.

And I’m not worried about them not being good for pavements, as there are walking and running shoes for that.

  3. I purchased this product a few months ago. These feel great on my feet. I bought 1 size larger than normal and they give my toes room to spread. I run an average of 4 miles a day, and these are great for outdoors, I even run on the treadmill with them. The fit and comfort are great. If you are on the fence with these shoes, I can tell they will help if you have the same condition with your feet.

I enjoyed reading your article so I want to share it with my Facebook group as it is an informative article so everyone can know about it and purchase it.
