Ankle Socks – The Good, The Bad & The Ugly

What are ankle socks, where do they stand within the fashion industry and how do you get the most out of them?

Ankle socks

Hi, my name is Brandon and this is my blog all about shoes.

Inside comes ankle socks, and there is a lot of confusion about them which I want to discuss today and help you understand.

Keep reading for everything you need to know about ankle socks.

What are Ankle Socks?

Ankle socks are designed to cover your entire foot and end at the top of your ankle.

Basically, they are a choice between not wanting to wear long socks because you’ll be too hot, and not wearing socks at all, but you still want comfort and warmth.

Also they are good for fashion which I will talk about later.

Most people wear the boring black and white colors but there are thousands of different color options and designs available today.

The Features

As with all things in life, you get what you pay for.

Paying $5 for 3 pairs is going to get you basics, not a lot of features and they will wear out quickly.

Common features of ankle sock are:

  • Blister tab
  • Toe seam
  • Lightweight and breathable
  • Arch support
  • Extra padding
  • Etc

Not all ankle socks are created equal, as you have to match the right sock with the right activity for the best fit.

For example:

A sock with lots of cushion is not going to perform well for fitness exercise because they don’t breath well.

But of course they will certainly do well for walking around the house.

When to Use Ankle Socks

Fitness activities

When it comes to fitness or intense cardio activity, you need one thing.

You need a sock to absorb all the sweat buildup.

A long pair of socks is going to be way too hot, and no socks at all is going to cause blisters.

Athletic ankle socks are called moisture-wicking socks because they absorb sweat from your feet which keeps you dry and irritation free!

The whole concept of ankle socks is to have them showing a little bit.

They are very different to long socks and no show socks.

No show socks are made to look like you aren’t wearing socks at all, while ankle socks are made to have a little bit of material showing.

This means we can spice it up with some color for personality, or simply match the color of the shoes to blend in.

Around the house

Some ankle socks have more cushioning then others, this is to provide comfort.

These work well when walking around the house or extra cushioning when wearing shoes.

Of course the extra padding increases weight and doesn’t allow your feet to breath, so padded ankle socks is a bad option for athletic activities.

Is It Okay for Men to Wear Ankle Socks?

Absolutely it is.

I am a man and always wear ankle socks.

I actually prefer them over crew socks because I don’t like the look of long socks, so I opt for something lightweight but still comfortable.

And that’s where ankle socks perform well for me.

I use them for work, the gym, and even casual use (going out with friends/family, dinner, etc).

Ankle socks are not gender specific, as anyone can enjoy the benefits of these awesome socks.

Major Benefits of Ankle Socks

Sleek and barely-there appearance – I don’t like my socks showing so I love that about ankle socks. It allows me to have the comfort without anything being there

Versatile – As mentioned already, ankle socks have lots of uses for many different activities. This allows almost anyone to benefit from them

Season-friendly – Another major benefit of the ankle sock is the ability to offer padding or breathability. The padding can be for colder months and breathability for the warmer months

Fashion-friendly – Ankle socks have hundreds of different style options. Pair them with some shorts or three-quarter pants, or simply a suit with a bit of ankle showing. Basically, they offer the same comfort as crew socks while keeping your overall look appear “neat”

Pros and Cons

  • Lots of colors and designs
  • Versatile, can be used indoors and outdoors
  • Season-friendly
  • Fashion-friendly, lots of fashion options
  • Gender-friendly (Are we still allowed to say that in 2020?)
  • Very affordable

  • Not as warm as crew socks in extreme winter conditions
  • The cheap pairs don’t last long

In Conclusion

All in all, there are lots of benefits to ankle socks.

There are many different style options and features to help you choose the right sock for the right activity.

They definitely do hold their place within the fashion industry and I have been using them all my life because of how comfortable and lightweight they are.

I hate my feet being hot so I always opt for lightweight and breathability.

But someone else might want there’s for comfort, and that’s where the padding comes in to play.

Well that concludes this article on ankle socks, what they are and how to wear them.

Thank you for reading and I hope you have a great day.

  1. When I was younger and my parents were the ones purchasing the socks, it was crew style all the way.

I never liked how that looked or felt, so when it came time for me to be in charge, I immediately switched to the ankle variety and haven’t looked back since!

I love them and wear them all the time around the house. I do tend to go through a lot of pairs though, as they are constantly wearing out. Any recommendations for a sturdy brand?

    • Sure thing Steve. I have been using COOVAN ankle socks for years and highly recommend them, especially for casual use and walking around the house.

They are very comfortable and don’t wear out as fast as the cheaper options.

  2. Oh! I love putting on ankle socks almost every time because they add the tiny bit of detail to the way everything else looks and that makes a lot of sense.

Thank you so much for sharing this post out here. They are very fashionable and they make a lot of details when combining colors of clothes in line with all other things being worn. Thanks

  3. Wow! I am learning something new!

I only consider ankle socks to be for men only, just to wear their shoes! But knowing is gender friendly, season friendly and can be use for fashion purposes is amazingly good!

The floor at home most times is cold for my feet instead of walking around with slipper which can be heavy for my feet I will consider getting an ankle socks!

Thanks for this information, it is appreciated.

    • Hey Lizzy.

I know what you mean about the cold hard ground at home. It can be a nightmare in the wintertime but ankle socks can definitely help with that problem.

I’m glad they make ankle socks because crew socks just don’t do it for me!

  4. I’ve always wanted to try ankle socks cause I’m a long distance runner and these look like they would be so comfortable. They do kind of look feminine in a way, so I understand why some people would question whether men can wear them. But I don’t care. If they are comfortable I’ll wear them regardless. My only concern is that since they’re so low I wonder wouldn’t they keep slipping down to heel? I don’t want to constantly have to pull them back up when running.

    • No show socks definitely do slip into your feet and the only way to fix this problem is to pay a little extra money.

However, when it comes to ankle socks, that is not a problem for me and never has been a problem.

Even with the cheaper ankle socks they never slip down.

  5. This is a very good post. The information you gave about ankle socks is right. Some people do not use the socks for the right activities. Some people see it as a fashion trend when in truth it has its own usefulness. It’s a good thing that you write all this about the socks. I need to share your post.

  6. Ankle socks are very versatile and has even more advantages than mentioned. I literally can’t do without one around my home, it gives me some form of comfort walking around the house rather than walking bare footed.

Ankle socks are also best used in some shoes especially shoes that doesn’t fit into your legs firmly.

    • I feel ya, evans. When it’s cold I definitely need to walk around the house in ankle socks to give me that extra coziness.

But I’ll go barefoot in the summertime.

Crew socks don’t do it for me, they are way too uncomfortable so that’s why I always opt for ankle socks.
