Brooks Ricochet Review – High Quality or Subpar?

The Brooks Ricochet looks like a great looking shoe and everyone seems to love it.

But as always, you can’t judge a book by its cover.

I think more research is needed to determine what we are really looking at here and how it performs for running.

Running shoes in this price range need to have the quality and performance to back it up.

Does this shoe have both of these?

Find out in this Brooks Ricochet review!

Bottom Line:

These running shoes are very versatile and high value for money.

They can be used for running, walking and all gym activities.

The downside is that the collar may rub against the skin and cause irritation, but doesn’t happen with everyone and can be eliminated with socks.

Other than that, they are the perfect gym kicks and running on roads, pavements and treadmills.

Introduction

Product name: Brooks Ricochet

Type of Shoe: Running

Best for: Gym, long distance, road, speed, cross training, treadmill

Bad for: Sports

Price: $62 – $225

What is the Brooks Ricochet?

The two best words to describe the Brooks Ricochet are springy and light.

Brooks have packed it with lots of features and the latest technology to keep up with the demands of the customers.

The lightweight frame feels like nothing’s there, they provide immense energy return with every step and amazing comfort.

The DNA AMP technology returns energy with minimum delay, promoting a springy feeling throughout your exercise.

This spring back does not compromise support or speed.

Even though it is “chock full” of features, it is still lightweight and allows for a quick and speedy run thanks to the Flyknit upper!

Something else I find interesting is the arrow-pointing pattern on the outsole. It propels you forward without losing energy.

That sums up all the features this sneaker has to offer, now lets figure out how to get the right fit.

Finding the Right Fit

Brooks are pretty consistent with their sizing and how well they fit customers.

It’s safe to say that the Brooks Ricochet shoes do fit true to size and you shouldn’t come across any problems with the fitting.

Wide Feet

Also they have a wide toe box.

This allows people with a wide forefoot to fit comfortably without feeling all squished and restricted in the toes.

And of course, preventing foot problems later on like bunions, hammer toes, etc.

Narrow Feet

Even those with narrow feet find them comfortable and that’s due to the Flyknit upper that promotes better comfort than traditional shoes.

Low, Neutral or High Arch?

They are specifically designed for neutral and high arch feet and that’s what I have found to be true after scouring through the hundreds of online feedback.

Those with low arches and flat feet will not fit these properly.

However, I have some alternative running shoes at the bottom of this article.

The Performance

Running

There’s no doubt that Brooks have some of the best running shoes in the world as they have won awards and titles.

The real question is, does the Brooks Ricochet perform?

That will have to be an easy yes.

There is just so much things that make it good for running like the lightweight Flyknit upper, responsive cushioning, wide toe box (for your toes to spread out naturally) and ventilation.

Plus they have arrow-pointing traction for faster heel-to-toe transitions…something I have never seen on a running shoe before!

From the official website:

They are good for long distance, speed/track, cross training, treadmill and road.

Walking

Some customers also use them for walking around town, walking the dog and fitness walking.

The Flyknit upper is really that comfortable that people with bunions or hammer toes can walk in them without feeling pain.

They also help remove pain in the back.

I have no doubts in my mind that they perform for walking as the proof is in the pudding.

Others with flat feet have walked in them and described them as “the most comfortable shoes they have ever worn”.

I cannot guarantee that they will fit anyone else with flat feet but it’s worth taking note.

Can they be used for anything else?

In my opinion, the only other things they would be good for are cardio like the stair master, treadmill, and cross training.

I don’t usually recommend running shoes for cross training but they state it on their official website, so they must be!

They make the perfect gym shoes.

What I Like

I like a lot about the Brooks Ricochet running shoes.

The fact that they are versatile and not just a speedy, lightweight, running sneaker.

Cross training and running shoes are usually a big no-no but that isn’t the case with the Ricochet.

I also like the arrow-pointing outsole which is something I have never seen before.

Although it makes complete sense because it encourages forward motion rather than a directional pattern that may reduce speed.

I like the Flyknit upper and lightweight design.

Shoes with this many features are usually big and bulky.

But in this case they are incredibly lightweight for what they offer.

The Bad

The bad news is that there is a common complaint about the top of the collar rubbing the skin and causing irritation, or sometimes blisters.

It is recommended to wear ankle socks to prevent constant rubbing.

No-show socks are too short and will not come high enough to combat this annoying collar issue.

Although keep in mind that it doesn’t happen with everyone.

And if it does, use ankle socks or longer to fix the problem.

The good news is that this is the only thing wrong with this shoe!

The Price & Where to Buy

They are currently discontinued on Brooks official website due to the release of Brooks Ricochet 2.0.

However, they are available at Amazon.com and have a price tag of $62 – $225.

The price is determined by the seller, colorway and size.

My recommended place would have to be Amazon for their fast deliveries and 30-day return policy!

Do I Recommend this Shoe?

In all honesty, Brooks never let me down.

Even the name “Brooks Ricochet” has a bit of a ring to it.

They have made an outstanding shoe for running, walking and every single gym activity…making them perfect of the average gym girl/bro.

They don’t have a cheap price tag but the quality, performance and versatility are up there.

They have been used for low arches and flat feet and have worked like a charm.

But they are not designed for it, and everyone is different.

What works for them might not work for you, so I would rather you check out my alternatives below if the arches of your feet happen to be closer to the ground.

Other than that, the Brooks Ricochet are highly recommended.

Alternative/Similar Running Shoes

The Altra Solstice is a shoe dedicated to casual running and beginners. It also has a wide toe box and minimalist design. The quality is not quite as good as the Brooks Ricochet, but definitely cheaper and a better alternative for anyone with flat feet or low arch.

Speaking of Brooks, the Brooks Transcend 6 are the perfect alternatives, especially those after similar quality, price range and comfort. The only real issue is the questionable tread quality.

Final Verdict

Brooks has it in the bag when it comes to running.

They know what works.

They know what it takes to create a comfortable, versatile, top quality sneaker with many different uses.

And that’s one of the highlights of this shoe, the fact that it can also be used for cross training.

If you’re looking for a shoe to take to the gym, this is it.

If you want a shoe for running around the neighborhood in a cloud of comfort, this is it.

If you want a walking shoe that helps ease foot problems and pains, this is it.

The bottom line is this:

They are a great pair of shoes and they will treat you right.

Well that concludes my Brooks Ricochet review.
