Washing shoes in the washing machine is not the most ideal thing to do, and Nike knows it’s a high risk of permanently damaging shoes.
There are just so many things that can go wrong if done incorrectly or following the wrong procedure.
Washing machines can and will destroy your expensive shoes permanently.
In fact, even Nike themselves say you shouldn’t wash their shoes in the washing machine due to this exact problem.
So I’m going to explain why you shouldn’t machine wash your Nike shoes, some possible damages you may face and what to do instead.
Can You Wash Nike Shoes In the Washer?
Nike state on their official website that no you should not and it’s a bad idea.
They know the potential dangers of washing shoes in the washer and they don’t want you damaging your shoes
However, that doesn’t mean you can’t wash your Nike shoes at all.
In this article I’m going to show you exactly how Nike recommends their shoes be washed.
It’s Always Best to Follow Manufacturers Recommendations
Whenever you’re doing something that can cause damage to a product, it’s best to look at the manufacturers recommendations.
In this case:
Going on the official website and seeing how they recommend washing Nike shoes.
And low and behold, they do NOT recommend washing their shoes in the washing machine.
Plus if you’re caught doing something the manufacturers forbid, you’re going to void the warranty and not get a refund or exchange.
How to Wash Nike Shoes (The Right Way)
The most risk-free way to wash Nike shoes is to hand wash them.
There’s absolutely no risk of damage to the shoes and that’s why you should follow these steps if you want to keep your Nike shoes in the best shape possible, for as long as possible.
Step 1: Remove the insoles and laces
Step 2: Create a solution of warm water and laundry detergent
Step 2: Use a soft-bristled shoe brush and remove excess dirt before placing it in the water. You can also do this by banging the shoes together
Step 3: Now put the shoe in the water and scrub until satisfied they’re clean enough. You can use a toothbrush to get the hard-to-reach areas
Step 4: Massage the laces (squeeze them inside the cleaning solution) until you’re satisfied they’re clean enough
Step 5: Replace the water to rinse off excess detergent and use a sponge to get any remaining soap off of the shoes.
Step 6: Now wash the insoles with the soft-bristles shoe brush. I recommend scrubbing in a circular motion for best results.
What About Drying? Can You Put Nike Shoes in the Dryer?
Again, the dryer is not in line with the manufacturers recommendations, as there are lots of risks involved with the dryer as well.
You can permanently damage shoes which is what Nike wants to avoid in the first place.
Nike recommends you air dry them at room temperature.
You can also stuff newspaper inside the shoe which will absorb a lot of the moisture.
But make sure to change the paper every few hours.
Deodorizing Your Nike Shoes
There are a few ways we can deodorize our Nike shoes to have them smelling squeaky clean with every use.
My favorite is placing dryer fabric softeners in each shoe and leaving overnight. But there are also other techniques that work wonders.
- Sprinkle baking soda inside your shoe and leave overnight
- Sprinkle a little salt inside and leave overnight
- Drip a few drops of essential oils. My favorite is tea tree oil
- Poor rubbing alcohol inside. This does 2 things, eliminates stink and disinfects
- Sprinkle baby powder inside. This is more of a prevention method as it prevents shoes from smelling after being worn
- Line the bottom of your shoes with cat litter. The litter contains deodorizers and absorbs liquids
- Freeze the sons of bitc*es. Putting your shoes in a plastic bag and leaving overnight will kill the bacteria
There are Risks Involved With the Washing Machine
You’re probably wondering why we shouldn’t wash Nike shoes in the washing machine, well it’s simple.
It’s to avoid permanent damage. Shoes aren’t exactly cheap so it’s best if we keep them in peak condition for as long as possible.
A lot of people don’t know this but the reason washing machines are a bad idea is cause they kill shoes.
They may warp your shoes (make them out of shape), shrink the shoe, soften adhesives, rip the fabric, change color, etc.
There are just so many risks involved and that’s why if you go the washing machine route you need to know what you’re doing first.
Well That Sums it Up
Yes you may wash your Nike shoes in the washing machine and may actually get away with it.
However, Nike are highly against this and that’s why it’s important to say in line with their recommendations.
You’re facing massive risks that can destroy your shoes once and for all.
And it’s my job to make sure this doesn’t happen so you can wash your shoes the right way and enjoy them at peak condition.
Well that concludes this article.
