What is the Nike Free Metcon 2?


The Free Metcon 2 is a cross training shoe, meaning it can be used for many different activities rather than just one thing.

It features a supportive, low-profile upper for increased mobility, and mesh material for ventilation.

The cage surrounding the middle of your foot offers a safe and secure fit, locking your feet in place without being restrictive.

The bootie construction creates a sock-like feeling, while the foam cushioning midsole offers stability for heavy weightlifting.

It’s then reinforced with rubber sidewalls for abrasion resistance during rope climbs.

The rubber outsole offers deep grooves for flexibility and expansion.

Add all of this together and you have a shoe down to perform for many activities.

Are they True to Size?

These shoes are made to feel snug and secure, close to the foot for good stability and traction for different activities.

You do not want the shoe to be so restrictive that you cannot move.

There needs to be a balance between security and snug, but nonrestrictive.

And that means getting your normal Nike size because they are actually true to size.

However, those with wide feet better go 1/2 size up because there’s a lack of movement in the toe box area.

How Do They Perform?


CrossFit

These shoes are designed for CrossFit and they actually do a pretty good job at it.

They have stability, traction, midfoot cage, flexible upper, and even a flexible rubber outsole for mobility to move in different ways.

They perform incredibly well for jumping, burpees, HIIT, running in short bursts, weightlifting, and more.

People love them for their CrossFit exercises and they have proven to work, so yes, these shoes are great for CrossFit exercises and Nike have done a great job.

Weightlifting

The second best thing they are used for is weightlifting.

Nike wanted them to do a combination of workouts.

They are sturdy enough for lifting heavy and light weight (cleans, squats, deadlifts, lunges, etc), and possess enough cushioning to keep your joints and bones safe from injury.

CrossFit shoes that can be used for weightlifting is mandatory, but sometimes shoe companies cannot get this right.

Nike definitely know what they are doing, so I have no complaints about the weightlifting abilities.

Walking and Running?

Nope, these are a no-go for walking and running unless they are short distances only.

This means if your workout requires running a short distance, that is okay as long as you are not going on a 30-minute run around your city.

That also means walking around the gym only, not using them for casual use or daily fitness walking.

They are used for cross training and weightlifting, and should only be used for this if you want best results and for them to a long time.

What I Like


I like the fact that they are perfect for what they are designed for which is cross training.

They perform incredibly well for HIIT, jumping, weightlifting, running around the gym, burpees, kettlebells, and more…pretty much anything in the gym except for running and walking.

I also like all the features they offer.

There’s a nice balance between features and lightweight which is what makes this the perfect training shoe.

When you lean towards one or the other, it lacks in one area and doesn’t perform as good.

There are many different colorways, available in men and women sizes and a stylish design that gets compliments.

The Bad Things


There is a common complaint about it squeaking when walking.

Although most say that it isn’t an issue because you can’t even hear it when working out anyway.

But when you’re walking through a quiet gym, it’s definitely noticeable.

I don’t know if this happens with every Metcon 2 but it’s certainly a common issue.

Keep in mind that those bringing this complaint to light STILL give it 5 stars, that’s how much people love it.

The Nike Free Metcon 2 Alternative


Reebok Men's Nano 9 Cross Trainer

One of the things wrong with this shoe is the squeaky noise that happens when you walk.

For some this is not a problem as most who love the shoe don’t even care about it.

But others absolutely hate it, which is something that you might not particularly enjoy either.

A different cross training shoe you may like is the Reebok Nano 9.

When I first reviewed this shoe I classed it as the most valuable cross trainer for the price, but after seeing the Metcon 2 I might have to change that statement.

The Reebok 9 is the same price, offers everything else as the Metcon 2 but without the squeaking sound.

However, it is not good for low arch or flat feet, but makes a great alternative nonetheless.

Final Verdict


The bottom line is this:

The performance far outweighs the bad, which is the squeaking sound when you walk.

But they are not walking shoes anyway and should not be worn for this.

The only walking they should be doing is to the car, in and out of the gym, and then back to the car.

Those buying them for walking or running tend to experience pain or discomfort.

They are built to perform for CrossFit activities and weightlifting, that’s it.

Use it for these activities and you have an amazing cross training shoe bound to get your workout done painlessly and efficiently.
