Bottom Line

As a bottom line, the Nike Air Vortex is versatile for all kinds of activities, comfortable, affordable and provide lots of support.

However, it does lack in durability in the soles and known to slip on wet pavement.

Nonetheless they are still a good shoe for the price as long as they aren’t used in the rain.

Product name: Nike Air Vortex

Good for: Cross training, running, walking, tennis, basketball, soccer, standing all day, walking around

Bad for: Not good in the rain (too slippery)

The Nike Air Vortex shoe first debuted in 1985 and was re-released in 2017 for those that love the retro look.

Nike continue to release new colorways and designs, as there are well over 20 colors and designs at the time of writing this article.

This shoe is created with a combination of suede, mesh and canvas, and even leather on the panels, heel and tongue.

There are touches of reflective material throughout the shoe so runners can be seen in low-light environments.

The rubber outsole keeps the shoe gripping different types of surfaces without slipping.

Nike Air Vortex Sole

It’s specifically designed for running and cross-training but can be used for fitness walking and even everyday/casual use.

Some of their colorways are amazing and people love them, but others (like the grey) has too much going on and looks messy.

In all honesty, they have mixed feedback which is what I will be covering in the “things to know” section.

So What Makes this Shoe Good?

Well it’s good for those who love the old school design, vintage or retro.

It’s good because it combines the appearance of a retro shoe with the latest cushioning technology to keep the shoe lasting longer.

Plus it’s a cross trainer so it can be used for almost any athletic activity out there.

For those that don’t know, a cross trainer is a hybrid of many different shoes added together.

It combines the cushioning of a running shoe, the stability of a basketball shoe and forefront cushioning of a volleyball shoe.

Plus it offers lots of flexibility and freedom for movement thanks to the low-top silhouette.

Things to Know About the Nike Air Vortex Shoe

Nike Air Vortex Side View

It is Fairly Lightweight

It’s not the lightest shoe on the market, but it is definitely lighter than other running shoes.

And that’s important when it comes to running and athletic activities, because the lighter the shoe, the easier it is to run/exercise.

Freedom for Movement

The low-top silhouette design makes moving around a breeze.

The shoe offers stiffness for running (since flexibility isn’t needed) but enough flexibility for walking.

And that’s what makes it a true hybrid, the fact that it offers lots of movement for any activity.

Comfort for Everyday Activities

Even though the Nike Air Vortex is designed for running or cross training, people have reported that they use it as their everyday shoe because it’s just so comfortable.

You can actually stand in them for over 8 hours a day without discomfort or irritation.

This makes the shoe good for running errands, going out to lunch, walking around all day at work, standing all day, visiting friends, etc.

Lack of Outsole Durability

The outsole is the bottom of the shoe. This is the rubber area that comes in direct contact with the ground and contains tread for traction.

Well the quality is in question by a few customers.

There are reports of the rubber sole not being durable enough to last a long time, and it’s actually the first part of the shoe to wear down.

May Slip on Wet Pavements

Another huge complaint about the Air Vortex is its ability to hold traction on wet pavements.

It is known to slip which can cause massive accidents for those who don’t know this specific problem.

However, this can be prevented by not using it in the rain and avoid outside activities when rain is expected.

Not True to Size

Just like other Nike shoes, the Air Vortex also don’t run true to size.

If you’re an avid Nike shoe buyer, then get your normal size as you would with other Nikes.

But if you’re a newbie and first coming to Nike, you should go at least half a size up to fit correctly.

This means if you’re a 10, get a 10.5.

Where to Buy the the Nike Air Vortex Shoe?

The best place to purchase these are from

They are renown for having the cheapest prices, fast shipping and free deliveries to the US.

Plus I might be a little biased due to their 30-day return policy!

This allows for a peace of mind knowing you can return your purchase if you don’t like it.

So Is It Worth the Price?

Sure there are some thing wrongs with this shoe, but no product is perfect.

It’s not the cheapest shoe on the market, but for the price I think it’s worth the money.

There are other shoes with the same quality that doesn’t stand up to the performance it was advertised for.

But the Nike Air Vortex definitely has all the comfort and stability needed for all activities and comes at a good price.

Do I Recommend these Shoes?

In my opinion, there aren’t many bad things about this shoe. And the ones that are aren’t a big deal.

The poor traction on wet pavements is a big deal but can be avoided by not performing vigorous activities in the rain.

Plus the wear and tear of the rubber sole is going to wear down the fastest on most shoes anyway.

Yes they may wear faster than other shoes but they are more expensive.

These ones are not even $100 and still last a good few months of everyday use.

For the price and versatility of these shoes, along with the retro design for old school lovers, I will have to say that the Nike Air Vortex shoes are highly recommended.

Alternative/Similar Shoes

The Saucony Kinvara 10 are a little bit more expensive, designed strictly for running but a lot lighter and lasts much longer than the Nike Air Vortex.

Also the Adidas NMD r2 Shoe has more durability in the outsoles and won’t be slippery on wet surfaces, which is more suited for those that love running in the rain.

My Final Opinion

I’m not a huge fan of them due to the appearance because I enjoy newer shoes more, but nonetheless, these are great for people who love the retro style look.

And I have no problems with that.

The Nike Air Vortex does have its pros and cons, just like very product on the market.

The best features are the comfort and versatility while staying in a great price range.

They can be used from standing all day, playing tennis or basketball, to running half a marathon.

They have lots of flexibility for almost any activity out there and that’s why it makes a great cross training shoe.

Sure the durability of the outsoles is not quite there like other shoes, but for the price, you can’t go wrong.
