While scouring Amazon I found a shoe called the Nike VTR and it caught my eye straight away. Not because of the design, but the cool colorway.
This lead me to learning more and discovering everything this shoe had to offer.
Too many times I have been let down after buying a sneaker online, and upon arrival it’s not as I expected it to be.
Or it doesn’t perform as good as it should.
But that’s why I’m here today.
In this Nike VTR review I will find out the good, the bad, and everything else you need to know.
At a glance
Product Name: Nike VTR
Designed for: Running, walking, casual
Expected lifespan: 8 – 12 months
Weight: 8 ounces
Price: $45 – $70
My rating: 4.5/5
The Nike VTR are okay but nothing great. They are an average pair of shoes that’s good for everyday use or going to the gym. They look good and receive compliments, but the durability is not exceptional. Although you should be able to get a year out of them.
What is the Nike VTR Sneaker?
VTR stands for Vial Tech Racer, and it combines modern technology to bring a fast and sleek shoe.
It features a low-top design to allow for quick and easy movements.
The athletic-inspired, ultra-light design makes running a breeze without weighing you down.
This is because the knitted mesh upper promotes ventilation and lightweight.
The midsole is soft and cushiony thanks to the injected foam midsole.
All this together means it can be used for athletics or wearing all day. It is completely up to you.
It consists of a patterned outsole that’s both flexible and grippy.
Well that’s really all I could find regarding the features of this shoe, so lets look at some of the more important stuff, like whether they actually fit!
Are the Nike VTR true to size?
Some of you may already know that Nike’s run 1/2 a size small, which happens to be true with the Nike VTR as well.
So if you usually shop with other brands and you’re coming to Nike, then going up 1/2 a size is mandatory.
However, for avid Nike wearers, they already run true to size.
There isn’t much information regarding the sizing for wide feet people.
But after months of reviewing Nike shoes, those with wide feet will have to size up regardless.
Are they good for running?
They are designed specifically for running and that’s how they got a good reputation in the first place.
The VTR stands for Vial Tech Racer, which means speed, momentum, lightweight.
They are very lightweight as they weigh a tiny 8 ounces, making them one of the lightest shoes on this blog!
The mesh allows your feet to breath and not get hot, and the durable traction keeps you gripped to any surface.
They are great for running as that’s what they are originally designed for.
Are they good for walking?
That’s another yes.
They’ve got flexibility in the upper which makes them easy to walk in.
People actually wear them for fitness walking and have found great success.
Also that brings me to my next point.
They are the perfect everyday sneakers.
These days they make shoes for most activities. They’re good for standing or walking all day…perfect for someone in high-activity jobs.
The lightweight design keeps the wearer in control without feeling bogged down, while the mesh upper prevents hot feet.
Plus there are lots of different colors available!
How’s the quality?
It’s not like they’re bulletproof or going to last years, as they are made of thin mesh and a cheap price tag, which usually indicates low quality.
But that also doesn’t mean they’ll crumble within a couple of months.
Nike are really good at creating good quality shoes for the price, and that’s what they have done with the Nike VTR.
Although there’s not a lot of feedback regarding the longevity, I wouldn’t expect them to last more than a year.
Still that’s not a bad thing considering the cheap price tag.
Are there better shoes for the price out there?
Are these still good for the price?
The negative reviews
Some say theirs was a counterfeit, others say they were too uncomfortable, and another person said theirs had already been worn.
While I do admit that this is frustrating and upsetting, it really does suck.
But not everyone’s pair is going to be perfect.
Some will slip through quality control and the complaints about the shoe already been worn does suck, it’s still not a reason to give it low stars.
Simply return it and get a new one, THEN you can give your rating on the actual performance of the sneaker.
Another reviewer complained about the color not being obsidian when it says so in the description.
Still, not a viable reason to give it low stars.
All in all these people are complaining about little things and should not be giving low stars.
At the end of the day it’s still a good shoe with different uses.
The high points
Solid basic sneaker
This shoe is versatile which means it has lots of different uses.
They can be worn to the gym, running errands, to work for your job, dressing up, dressing down.
It’s not highly fashionable but still a good everyday shoe with the ability for exercising.
Although reviewers do say they go with pretty much anything!
Comfortable and lightweight
They are very comfortable sneakers and the lightweight is the icing on the cake.
They feel like you’re walking on clouds, while the mere 8 ounce weight makes it easy to go about your day without being bogged down.
Some even wear them for 10 hours a day, 5 days a week (without any discomfort or pain!).
Gets lots of compliments
There are about 7 different colors on Amazon, and all of them get compliments.
Some are brighter than others but one thing worth mentioning is that the obsidian color looks black inside and doesn’t look blue until you’re out in the sun.
Just keep that in mind if you decide to get the obsidian colorway.
Pros and cons
- Very comfortable, and doesn’t really need breaking in
- Cheap price tag but worth it
- Comfortable and lightweight
- Athleisure wear. Good for many different things
- A couple of customers claim theirs was already worn
Do I recommend them?
These are basic, sleek, minimalist, athletic, everyday shoes.
They are good for many different things and only lacks in the durability department.
However, that’s because they are on the cheap side but still good quality for the price.
They aren’t made of steel and will not last for years.
Although you should get at least 8 – 12 months out of them.
Do I recommend them?
Nike always delivers because they’ve been creating shoes for many years and know how to create a successful shoe for cheap.
I like the cool looking design and the fact that they are perfect everyday shoes, especially for active people who want to be ready for a workout!
The Nike VTR shoes are highly recommended.
Alternative running shoe: Adidas Kaptir
Like I said, the Nike VTR won’t last for years and you’ll be lucky to get more than a year out of them.
However, Adidas are on their game when it comes to flawless sneakers and one I like very much is the Adidas Kaptir.
They’re in a similar price range but a little more aesthetically pleasing.
The primeknit upper makes it more snug and form-fitting.
They’re perfect for running, walking, casual, and even the gym!
My final opinion
These are a solid, minimalist, everyday shoes,
That’s the best way to describe the Nike VTR’s.
They aren’t the most durable and certainly not the best in the price range.
However, if you’re wanting something easy that has a good reputation, these are for you.
They aren’t amazing or bad, they are in-between.
Well that concludes this article on the Nike VTR shoes.
Thanks for reading this review and I hope you have a great day.
