What are Nike Flyknit Shoes?

Nike is renown for adapting to new technologies and giving the people what they want.

Nike Flyknit Racer Shoes

They have been running for 56 years and will probably be leading the industry for another 56 years!

The Flyknit shoe is a fine example of how well Nike uses the latest technology to create bigger and better shoes for the people.

Flyknit shoes first debuted in 2012 and Nike continue to add this new Flyknit technology to their shoes in 2020.

And it’s only going to get even better as the years go by.

So what is Flyknit, exactly? That’s what I’m going to talk about in this article.

What Is a Flyknit Shoe?

Flyknit is a digitally engineered knitting process in which shoes are designed as one whole piece, rather than different patches stitched together.

What is that in Layman terms?

The entire upper shoe (not including the sole) is one whole piece.

Normal shoes are stitched together with many different patches, and although it is completely fine because that’s how we’ve always done it, it is long outdated.

Technology is on the rise and there are much better ways at creating products, and Nike has done this by taking advantage of this technology and using it on their shoes.

So What Does Nike Flyknit Shoes Offer?

As you’re probably wondering, what are the main benefits to this new technology?

Surely there must be some major advantages to this new knitting process, and indeed there is and I’m about to tell you.

More Control

The shoe is one, not many different pieces.

This gives athletes more control in their movements and extra security knowing they’ve got absolute control over their actions.

Lighter, More Breathable

Of course one of the downsides to traditional shoes is the amount of weight they provide, limiting speed and bursts of movements.

Well Flyknit offers incredible lightness and more breathablity.

Athletes can move quicker and their feet can breath more, limiting sweat and ensuring the athlete stays comfortable for longer.

They “Lock In”

The shoe fits closer to the foot, creating a second-skin feeling.

This actually “locks” the shoe in place and limits in-shoe movement

More Agility and Quickness

Quickness

Because the foot and shoe become one, and prevents foot movement as much as possible, the athlete has more agility and quickness.

They can run faster, run for longer (because of less weight) and move in short bursts for longer, creating a great shoe for any sport.

Added sustainability

Nike has gathered a lot of data throughout their 56 years of creating shoes, and they’ve applied that to Flyknit shoes.

Flyknit uses 60% less waste than conventionally built shoes!

Comfort

Need I say more?

Comfortable shoes can make or break an athlete, and it’s good to see that Nike hasn’t skimped over this very important aspect.

Even Instagram models buy these and showcase them on their pictures because they’re aesthetically pleasing and EXTREMELY comfortable.

Add Flyknit shoes with joggers or yoga pants and you’re never going to want to change out of them.

As long as Nike keep catering to the peoples needs, they will continue growing and people will continue buying.

Waterproof

If you’re an avid runner, you know exactly how it feels to accidenatelly run in a puddle and get your socks and feet saturated.

Well Nikes’ new Flyknit shoes has advanced waterproofing to stop this from happening as much as possible.

But more on waterproofing in a second.

What Are The Downsides to Flyknit?

Of course there’s got to be some downsides right?

And yes there is.

One of the biggest downsides is the expensive prices.

Flyknit shoes possess much more quality than traditional shoes and last longer.

Most Flyknit shoes are well over $100 but it’s not uncommon to see some under $100.

However, currently they are nowhere near as cheap as traditional Nike shoes.

Another downside is some of their shoes aren’t 100% waterproof.

Are Nike Flyknit Shoes Waterproof?

Puddle Jump

Yes, Flyknit shoes are designed to be waterproof and possess waterproofing substances to resist everything that life throws at them.

However, just like all waterproof objects, some perform better than others.

In this case some shoes are more waterproof than others.

This is a result of how the shoe is made, how much waterproof has been added, etc.

But the answer to this question is yes, Nike Flyknit shoes are definitely waterproof and they’re designed to resist rain, puddles, mud, stains, etc.

Can You Wash Nike Flyknit Shoes?

There’s a lot that can go wrong when washing shoes in the washing machine and dishwasher.

Hot water, direct heat, all that jazz can destroy shoes permanently and although you might get lucky when putting your Nike shoes in the washing machine, I do not recommend it one bit.

And neither does Nike.

I’m on Nikes’ side with this one and think you should wash your Flyknit shoes exactly like Nike traditional shoes, by hand washing.

It’s the least riskiest and you can really keep your shoes for longer since they’re not banging around in the washer or being exposed to extreme heat.

However, if you do decide to machine wash your Flyknits for whatever reason, make sure to turn the temperature off, wash the laces and insoles separately (if they can be removed) and put the shoes in a laundry bag to keep them safe.

Balance out the load with some old towels.

Can You Put Flyknit Shoes in the Dryer?

I do not recommend drying normal shoes in the dryer, let alone Flyknit shoes.

Dryers are known to warp shoes, change colors and soften adhesives, and I just can’t let that happen, especially not with expensive Flyknit shoes.

The very best way to dry them is with room temperature or hang them outside under some shade, safe from the sun.

Can You Use them For Everyday Use?

As mentioned in this article, Instagram influencers are wearing these shoes in pictures because they look absolutely amazing.

They are aesthetically pleasing and did I mention they are insanely comfortable?

Yes they can be used for everyday/casual shoes, around the city, hanging out. People are using these as their everyday shoes and found great success.

They usually have more insole and cushion than traditional Nike’s and that’s what makes them so comfortable.

Do You Wear Socks With Nike Flyknit Shoes?

Flyknit shoes are designed to be sockless, so socks are not needed and that’s exactly what they’re designed for.

The whole idea with Nike Flyknit is to feel like a second-skin, but you can still wear socks if you choose to do so.

But what about ventilation?

The upper part of the shoe is specially designed to breath and promote air flow while the perforated Flyknit increases air flow by dissipating heat through the ankle area.

How Much Do They Weigh?

These shoes are designed to be small and lightweight because no one wants to run around in bulky, heavy ass shoes.

The mens Free Flyknit weighs in at 7.4 ounces (size 10) and the women’s is 6.1 ounces (size 8).

Of course other styles are different sizes but they are all lightweight and easy to run in.

How to Protect Your Flyknit Shoes For Ultimate Longevity

Flyknits are very expensive so it’ll be in your best interest to keep them in tip top condition for as long as possible.

There are a couple of ways we can do this.

1. Do not machine wash your shoes

2. Keep them out of hot temperatures or direct heat, such as: the fireplace, dryer, the sun, etc.

3. Store them in the right places

Hot and humid conditions will create moisture and speed up the dry rotting process. This guide shows how to store shoes for the long-term.

4. Wash your shoe after every use. Even if it’s a 5-minute hand wash, keeping them clean is a huge part of making them last longer.

5. Every couple of months I would recommend filling up the sink and soaking them with lukewarm water, laundry detergent and scrubbing them.

Overtime they absorb a lot of sweat so this will help with the odor and keep them smelling fresh.

6. Stay away from protective sprays. Most of the time these are not scientifically tested and can damage your shoes permanently.

I do not recommend applying protective sprays for added waterproofing and repellent, as Nike Flyknit shoes are well protected from factory.

Conclusion

Some love ’em, some hate ’em.

However, at the end of the day, Flyknit shoes are a great addition to Nikes’ every expanding arsenal of great shoes and they’re only getting better.

Flyknit shoes have some amazing cushioning, support, flexibility and comfort and that makes a good combo when you’re out and about taking on the world.

They really are out to help the people and that is what makes an amazing company with a strong reputation.

And because of that I will have to say that they are a force to be reckoned with and I can’t wait to see what else they release in the future!
