When it comes to Altra, I am the “guru”. Okay that was a tad cringe but hey.
But I am the guy that wears Altra and have reviewed more than enough handfuls of their shoes.
So I know a lot about this company and how their shoes perform which is why I think I am the guy to give you the lowdown and how they perform.
Keep in mind that I may be a little biased here but please hear me out, it’s going to be good.
This is me going off of my own experiences and the things I have read over the years of other peoples experiences with Altra sneakers.
So without further ado, lets get right into it.
What Makes Altra Shoes So Good?
They Have the Best Shoes for Running
Altra SPECIALIZE in running shoes.
Let that sink in for a second…
That means all their research is on how running works, what the people need in running shoes, how to balance comfort VS lightweight, etc.
They are the guys that people go to when they want a comfortable shoe that’s built to perform.
I have reviewed many Altra shoes and I have come to the conclusion that their running shoes offer incredible comfort, traction, support and stability.
Their Running Shoes Can Be Used for Walking
The thing is, Altra shoes are versatile, meaning they can be used for a variety of activities.
Most of the time they are good for walking, running, and casual use.
Their shoes have adequate flexibility which is a must in a walking shoe.
Walking requires a full range of motion, and Altra shoes have enough flexibility to offer that.
So are Altra shoes good for walking?
Pretty much all of Altra’s shoes that I have seen have been good for walking and running!
Their Shoes are Good For Flat Feet, Neutral Arch, and High Arch
The good news is that Altra has many different shoes to fit everybody.
Some of their shoes are good for flat feet, some are good for neutral arch and others are good for high arch.
However, sometimes this can be confusing when shopping online.
For some reason shoe manufacturers don’t like to disclose this information on official product pages, making it difficult to find if the shoe is good for high arch, neutral or flat feet.
We are supposed to just assume that it’s a good fit for us.
I’ve been reviewing products for years, and the easiest way to know something about a product is to search keywords in the customer reviews.
For example: On Amazon there is a specific area where you can search up a keyword that you want to learn more about. In this case it would be “arch”. Then you can see what others are saying about the arch support.
In my experience, Altra has a wide range of shoes for all arch types. It’s just a matter of doing the research to find what it’s best suited for.
They Are Amazing For Wide Feet
Altra are renown for their wide toe box.
Customers absolutely love the extra room in the toe area which spread out toes out naturally.
This encourages a more smooth and natural run, especially for those with wide feet.
People with a wide forefoot usually go for Altra because of how much extra room they have to move freely, and that’s something that makes Altra stand out from the rest.
So if you’re wondering if Altra shoes are good for wide feet, yes, they definitely are.
They Have Zero Drop Technology
Every Altra shoe has something called zero drop technology. This feature puts the forefoot and heel at the same distance to the ground.
The main benefit of Zero Drop is to remove pain from the waist, lower back, knees, etc. This allows your feet to move like it naturally would if it were running barefoot.
Basically, it distributes the impact to the calf muscles and removes the stress off of the joints.
This makes your calves more toned while removing pain from areas that cannot handle the stress.
Zero Drop is not for everyone, but if you’re constantly experiencing pain in the knees, lower back, waist, etc, Zero Drop is definitely something to consider.
Prevention of Plantar Fasciitis, Hammer Toes, Bunions, Etc
Lets talk about the wide toe box a for a second. I want to talk about how it prevents common foot problems like plantar fasciitis, hammer toes, bunions, and more.
Traditional shoes squash your toes together which creates an unnatural way of standing, walking, running, or whatever you’re doing.
This is a recipe for disaster and only causes problems over a long period of time.
You don’t wake up one day and see that you have hammer toes. They form over years and years due to too-tight shoes and the unnatural position of your toes.
Well the extra room prevents foot problems, enhances stability, and increases performance.
Even if you don’t have a wide forefoot, it’s going to prevent some of the common foot problems later in life.
Most Run True to Size
If you usually wear Nike, you know that their shoes run 1/2 small. It’s just a matter of sizing up with every new shoe.
However, that is not the case with Altra. Some Altra’s are true to size and some are made 1/2 size too small.
So this is something you need to consider before making any final decisions.
I know some Altra shoes that are too big, some too small, and others that are perfect and do not need sizing up.
This may seem a little frustrating, and it is in my opinion.
Although sites like Amazon make this easier to understand because they have a “fit rate”.
I find that an 83% “fit rate” or higher means the shoes most likely fits true to size.
Anything lower than that and more research is needed to determine what the cause of the low percentage is.
Pros and Cons of Altra Shoes
- Their shoes BREEEEATH
- They are lightweight
- They offer a wide toe box for wide feet and foot problem prevention
- Their shoes are versatile
- They are very comfortable
- Quality construction
- A lack of stability for sports with lateral movement patterns
- Not all of their shoes are true to size
To wrap this up, I want you to know one thing.
Altra has a running shoe for anyone and everyone.
They want people to find a shoe that they can love and use for many years to come, and that’s why they are always coming up with new ways, technologies and features to better their performance.
At Altra, you will find a shoe for wide feet, narrow feet, high arch, low arch, neutral, arch, literally anything.
And that’s why I think Altra are the best shoe company for running and I will continue to stand by that statement until I am proven otherwise.
